US "Quarter Eagle" $2.50 Dollar Gold

The US Gold $2.50 ('quarter eagle') gold coin was issued in 1796, and was the first coin to feature an eagle with a shield on its chest. Minted until 1929 with several gaps during the years. These coins often have a higher than normal premium because they were frequently melted down as the price of gold surpassed the face value.
